Bill, always a delight to catch up on The Harbor. Love the Galleries and seeing the new equipment and launches. Smiled when I saw they went back to the old Launch design. Squat and ugly but it is perfect in NY harbor.
Still upright and mobile in sunny Florida.

On April 30th my good friend Howie Stein passed away. He was my partner for 9 years. We worked Pier A, 5 tours together when the department decided on that type of chart. Around 1968, I think it was when Harbor cut down from 8 boats to 3, Howie went to the 83. He was a good Harbor cop and a good street cop. My family and I will certainly miss him. When you Harbor cops see a seagull, say HELLO to Howie for me. You could always tell Howie was a German but you couldn't tell him much.
Thank you,

I am attempting to make contact with a retired member of the Harbor Unit, Frank Brogan. I knew Frank approximately 20 years ago as a teenager and friend of my father, Gerard Coppola. Frank taught my father to sail and then, when my father and I learned to dive, Frank became our occasional dive buddy on trips. I was privileged to have Frank as one of my early diving and sailing mentors. If you have any contact information for him, or can direct me toward someone who does, I would appreciate it. I simply want to inform him that his friend, my father, passed away on November 15, 2010 and to thank him for lessons taught to a young sailor and diver that are remembered still by an older sailor and diver.
Best regards,
Evan Coppola

"All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that goodmen do nothing." (Edmund Burke)
This speech by William Wallace in the Movie
gBRAVEHEARTh
says it all.
@
"I am William Wallace.
And I see a whole army of my countrymen,
here in defiance of tyranny!
You have come to fight as free men.
And free man you are!
What will you do without freedom? Will you fight?"
"Two thousand against ten?" - the veteran shouted.
"No! We will run - and live!"
"Yes!" Wallace shouted back.
"Fight and you may die.
Run and you will live at least awhile.
And dying in your bed many years from now, would you be willing to trade all the days from this day to that for one chance, just one chance, to come back here as young men and tell our enemies that they may take our lives but they will never take our freedom!"

New york, NY USA - Friday, April 03, 2009 at 15:44:28 (EDT)
On March 26 2009, the events of September 11th 2001 were officially forgotten by New York City. It was announced yesterday that the Freedom Tower will no longer bear it's intended name which was intended to memorialize the victims and first responders of the cowardly terrorist attacks that day. Instead, the tower will be known just as 1 World Trade Center. This is a torrid display of politics at it's worst and is an abomination on all levels. While I wasn't a Police Officer yet when 9/11 happened, I work with many men and women that suffer physically from the attacks aftermath. These are good people that were willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for an ungrateful City that suffers from severe memory loss and even a more severe lack of respect. This lack of respect is targeted at the innocent people that were killed just for being American's and the first responders killed for being good, responisble human beings that had a sense of duty to it's people, the City, and the Country.
When you see NYPD Harbor Launch 35 on the water, remember that fateful day and remember how the City has forgotten us, the innocent victims killed that day, our first responders killed, and the men and women that continue to punch in for work even though they suffer physically and emotionally.
When you see a Police Officer on the street, thank them, and let them know that even if the majority of the City has forgotten us, that you have not.
Even thank the young Police Officers, those that came onto this job after 9/11. They are just as brave as those that witnessed the atacks first hand. They are brave because they took this job knowing that we are a dying breed like the knights of yore, discarded for false hero's and political whitewashing.
Never forget.

Since retiring from the job in December 1986 I have never been more touched by any video in regard to "23 Heroes". I am a Trustee on the Charlotte NC 1013 Club and have fowarded the video to the Members of the Club. WE have a lot of retired ESU Members who have lost good friends on that horrible day.
Oh, by the way my son Ben is the officer who contributed the photos to Bill Smith for the Bent Wheel Club.

Just a short note to comment on Bill Smith's 9/11 video. I have never seen a documentary so well put together, that really captivates you and holds your attention. My dad was SGT Michael Derby of the NYPD ESU. He spent over 30 years on the job and loved everything about it. He was friends with many of the guys from Harbor and even took us out on the launch when we were kids, I have such wonderful memories of his days as a Police officer. Tomorrow we mark the 20th Anniversary of his death. My mom still misses him terribly but the guys never forgot about her. He was on active duty when he passed away and had an inspectors funeral. My siblings and I are still in awe of the whole thing and are very greatful for all that was done for our family both at my fathers passing and after. I just happened on this site and am glad it is out there.

once pier 64 was getting demolished (grand old shed she was) in June 2006 we were kicked out by the Hudson River Park Trust (ahem, perhaps we were asked "to leave"). In any case, apparently there was no where else in this 4.5 miles of Hudson River in Manhattan our humble 53' vessel would fit. In any case, the Shipyard Marina in Hoboken (across from West 22nd-23rd in Manhattan) is now our home port. We are very grateful to be sharing this pier with the retired ferry YANKEE, another Hudson River Park evacuee. Thanks goes to our volunteer Captains and crew--of whom we ask a great deal! If you have time, tales, or just want to come by for a visit don't hesitate to call Metropolitan Waterfront Alliance (www.waterwire.net, operator of the boat for the owner Municipal Art Society (www.mas.org) who received the boat as a gift from the estate of William Gottlieb.... 212-935-9831 or 800-364-9943. regards,

It is with deep regret that my Dad, Kenneth H. Swenson, aka; "The Swede" from Harbor "Charlie" has passed away on August 5, 2006. He was in Harbor for approximately 35 years and was retired for approximately 14 years now. Dad's time in Harbor was the highlight of his career and he spoke of it often. The family would appreciate any photos of Dads time in Harbor for our memories.
Sincerely,

My Dad, John Garvey, served in the Harbor Unit at the Launch Repair shop from 1947 until 1966. His stories about "the shop" are legendary--even 5 years after his passing, our family, right down to the grandchildren, can repeat them verbatim. What wonderful memories! The only name on the site I recognized was Walter Klotzbach, but others who star in Dad's stories include Pat Brady, Frank Convy, Grolliman, Cap't Morrisey, Lt. McGuire, Eddie Baragiola, Johnny Cox...Thanks for a wonderful "link" to my Dad!

Dear Officers
I was very impressed in your web site. As a ex USCG coxswain stationed at Station New York it was a please and honor to have worked with the New York City police. From 1968 to 1972 I was in the regular coast guard operating such vessels as the old 40 footers ( 40391,40432,40467,40468 and 40451. In 1972 I stayed in the Coast Guard Reserve running 30s, 32s, 38s and 41s. One of the best part of working as a New York Coxswain was working many jobs with the NYP.
After getting out of the regular CG, I worked as a launch captain for Stapleton Launch. We had a gentleman named Bob Cook who also worked part time on the Stapleton Launches At the age of 23, I was able to get a job with Texaco Marine first as a deckand and ended as a mate and relief captain. After 20 years of running such tugs as the Texaxo Fire Chief, Marfak, Houma and Avjet Texaco sold the fleet. From 1994-2001 I worked operating the Bouchard Rhea Bouchard and Brendan Bouchard.
Retired in 2001 I miss the small boats working with your men on everything from security to p.i.w., floaters and major and minor fires. Spent many a time tied up at your dock just inside the Harlem River. Good luck and god bless. Frederick Mallett

Nice to visit the site.Though I spent only approx. 90 days [1984] in Harbor, they were eventful to say the least. Got to go fishing for a scuba man; and luckily was able [with help from Bill Cook & Bill Church] to reel him into a waiting copter to Bellvue. He survived, but I didn't. I have the privledge and honor to be engaged to the daughter of a long standing member of the Marine Unit. Donald Kaufmann served with the Unit from 1960-1990,91. I am trying to get some info and insite into the man who would have been walking my bride down the aisle but due to his passing in 1997, he will be with us only in spirit. Nancy and I would appreciate any real life stories about Dad (Donald) that you would be willing to share with us. I thank each and every one of you who serve honorably every single day and may God look after one and all.
Respectfully,
Mark E. Davis

My dad Lt. Alex Caruso sends his regards to all of those Harbor members he worked with from 1958-1983. He has nothing but fond memories of those years and I was fortunate myself to meet some of those officers. Also, my cousin Mike is currently assigned to the Harbor and has continued the family tradition.

Bill.
This web-site is a wonderful tribute to the Harbor Unit. I am one of those people that has always been facinated by the blue and white vessels in the harbor. The site makes the men and machines of the Unit much more personal and real. As a dedication to your father, this website truely speaks from the heart. I hope more people have the opportunity to view and appreciate this effort. Clearly, you and Greg are very special people - it's an honor to know you both.
Sincerely,
Steve

Sorry I forgot about the "affair" May 9th...it was "Hell" week for me!
Although I live in Westchester, I've kept a boat in Brooklyn for YEARS (Since 1982) and fish as often as the weather permits.
You will see me on the water with "Blackjack 3"...blowing my horn, and trying to catch some fish.
Once again...thanks for the memories!

Glad to see this web site. It is really great! Please add me to your current mailing list. Let me give you some back round info on myself. My Dad and I were both assigned to Harbor. Dad is 90 years old and lives at 4703-67 St. Woodside NY. He spends half the year in Florida. He is on your mailing list. I was assigned to the unit in 11/03/66 to 01/30/84...transfered to ESU/EMS (PD Ambulance)until I retired on 06/05/99. Harbor stays in your blood and I loved the command. I transferred out only because I needed week-ends off. My son was accepted into West Point and I didn't want to miss anymore important events in his life that happens to all of us working a patrol chart. Since retiring I moved two times and made efforts to keep the Club informed as to my residence but I guess I got lost in the suffle. I will be at the next Bent Wheel Affair...looking forward to seeing old friends and making new one's. My best to all my brothers.

Enjoyed the site very much. Great photos which brought back many memories. Vividly remember the "Parade of Police Launches" for the 1978 Harbor Festival. Harry Wasiluk was the C.O. at the time. There should be some photos of the Harbor Unit being presented with a sterling silver momento for their work during the Harbor Festival. Presentation was made in the P.C.'s (McGuire) Office. Incidently, the 3rd man in the photo of Mayor Lindsey and Sgt. Smith is Det. Ernie Latty, a real gentleman. I had the good fortune to work with him around 1975-1977.

Great site. I am proud of the 7 + years I served with the NYPD, before rolling over to the Suffolk County PD. I especially enjoyed my final year 1993-1994 when I worked at Harbor George. The professionalism and the knowlege displayed by the men and women of the Harbor unit is second to none. I consider it an honor to to have worked with some of the HU legends such as Billy Church Sr, Kenny Hansen Sr. among other extraodinary pilots in the unit.I have been with the SCPD Marine Bureau for over 6 years now , and run the Marine kilo boat. (38' Thomas marine aluminum hull with twin 3116 Cat diesels ) Murf. I know you will appreciate my inclusion of the spec's ! Feel free to look me up if ever out in Suffolk County or drop me an e-mail. Good luck with new launch 35 ( I would love to see the spec's on her, and how she goes with the 4 bladed wheels) I hope to see you guys at the BWC club affair in May. laying out the galley and birthing areas on Launch 8, I am not concerned about outward appearences yet so when the interior is finished then the color scheme similar to a Mike Boat will prevail.
