On September 11, 2003 at North Cove Marina (Ground Zero) New York City, a new 25 foot NYPD Harbor Patrol Launch was dedicated. She was christened "23 Heroes" in memory of the 23 officers who gave their life at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.
Mayor Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Kelly were on hand to speak to the families of the victims. Henry Paulsen, chairman of Goldman Sachs - the donor of the boat - also spoke to the families and the gathered crowd of officers who showed up to pay tribute to their fallen brethren.
After the official christening by Mayor Bloomberg, the families of the 23 heroes were invited to tour the new vessel before she set out on her first patrol.
